Being Faithful in the Little Things

Saint Mother Teresa said, “Be faithful in the little things, because it is in them that your strength lies.”

This quote comes to mind at the end of the day when my husband is getting our boys ready for bed and I am cleaning and tidying our house for bed time.

I grab my broom and I feel the revolt within me. I really don’t want to sweep. I don’t want to wipe the table. I don’t want to put away the food. I just want to sit down.

But Mother Teresa’s words keep me going. They beckon me to not indulge in the easy and comfortable but in the simple-heroic duties of loving my family.

From this space of choosing to be faithful to my nightly cleaning routine, I feel that strength. I chose that which serves me and my family when I could have easily left our house the way it was.

I have prepared a beautiful space for family prayer.

I don’t have crumbs sticking to the bottom of my feet.

I value the food that I prepared to nourish our bodies by putting away leftovers so that they don’t spoil.

I am satisfied and content with the fruit of my labor.

There is a beautiful strength hidden in the simple ordinary of motherhood, especially when we choose to serve our families in love.

There is no task too lowly, that when we choose to carry it out in love, can bring forth the strength we need to be faithful to our God, our husbands, our children, our home, and our world.

Be faithful, be present. There, His strength awaits you.
